Director Shafi try an unexplored territory in '101 Weddings', the world of a mass marriage ceremony which has not been tried in Malayalam so far.But sadly the film on the whole is disappointing due to the lack of a coherent story and screenplay.
The backdrop of a mass wedding ceremony, the story revolves around prospective grooms and brides who come together for a two-week counselling session prior to the big day. Kasturba Seva Gramam, where they are all put up, becomes a hive of activity, with 101 couples ready to exchange garlands and tie the knot.Amidst this group is Kunchako Boban as Krish, a man who is the anti-thesis of his staunch social worker father.Krish is ambitious and enjoying life. Jayasurya plays an effeminate dancer,Jyothi. He has not been able to find his soul mate yet. Another important character is Biju Menon who plays a rowdy,Antappan.Samvritha Sunil plays a social worker for the underprivileged. Bhama plays a poor girl.
The film leaves you disappointed despite the interesting premise of the story.
The problem with '101 Weddings' is that it is neither a comedy nor a drama. It gives the feel as though you have watched two films as post interval, the characters and changes which does not have anything to do with the main narration and then the director tries to somehow end the story by a contrived climax.
The film falters as there is not enough meat left to see the second half through. What follows is one gimmick after another to sustain the drama which does not really work.
The highlight of the film is obviously Biju Menon as Antappan, his walk, mannerism and dialogue delivery are all top class. Kunchacko Boban does a decent job as Krish,Jayasuriya does his unusual role, but sometimes annoying while Suraj Venjaramood and Bhama are wasted.Samvritha provides that oomph factor and appear pretty all through.Salim Kumar and Vijeesh(Noolunda) portrays an almost eccentric character and has done a decent job.The songs by Deepak Dev is also re-hashed.On the plus side, Azhagappan’s camera has beautifully etched out .
If you are looking out for a Comedy film, sometimes this one will impress you with some fine comedies. But If you are looking out for a Shafi Comedy movie, this one surely disappoints you, most of the comedies were Chali's.I'm giving 2.5/5 for this Wedding show.Fails to rise to audience expectation as the script is half-balked. —
